Babbacombe, a village in its own right within Torquay, is a truly unique and fun place to visit. It is a spectacular place to take your family or even to just take a day of relaxation for yourself.
Babbacombe has even been called, the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of the English Riveria!
Among many of Babbacombe’s attractions, is the Oddicombe beach. This beach has some amazing views. The promenade is a great place from which to see Lyme Bay. You can even see as far as Dorset and Portland Bill. Oddicombe beach has beautiful water too; it looks crystal clear. Also on the promenade are a number of shops and restaurants to suit any kind of taste!
The Oddicombe beach promenade has some fantastic features too. The theatre, for instance, is one site that you do not want to miss. It shows some wonderful performances that even include West End hits such as “Cats” and “Phantom of the Opera”.
If you do catch a show, make sure you enjoy that structure of the theatre as well. It has been around a while! In 1920 a bandstand was added and it did not change for 50 years. In 1986, new management took over and refurbished the theatre. Since then, the theatre has extended their summer hours. It now holds the longest running season in the country. That should give you plenty of opportunities to catch a great show.
Babbacombe Model Village
Another major attraction is the Babbacombe Model Village. It is world famous because it is so unique. What is it? The Babbacombe model village is a large amusement park on a miniature scale. You and your family can come see an amazing village that looks so realistic, you will forget it is make-believe.
The village is full of thousands of miniature houses and people; there is even a train that runs through it. If you have visited the model village before, you need to come again. There are some new features added to the site! One feature is a 4D theatre. Another is a behind the scenes look at the development of the tiny village. If you happen to come around a holiday time, there are special events for Halloween and Christmas. The model village is such a unique experience that can only be found here.
Babbacombe Cliff Railway
Babbacombe is also known for its Cliff Railway. It has an interesting history, being built in 1890 by two very famous architects, George Newnes MP and George Croydon Marks. The two men had a vision of building a railway on the edge of cliff. It may sound crazy but it is a beautiful place from which to view the sea.
